Mein Interesse an "Trip Hop" bzw. der Musik der diesem Genre zugeordneten Bands verlief in der Vergangenheit stark wellenförmig. Während Massive Attacks Leistungen der letzten Jahre ebenso "wechselhaft" waren, hörte man von Portishead einfach gar nichts. Irgendwie vermisste ich sie auch nicht. Bis ich vor einigen Wochen erstmals "Machine gun" hörte.
Heute kam das "Limited edition box set" an. Bislang zuckte ich zusammen, wenn ich etwas von "Poststreik" in den Medien hörte, jetzt verliert es an Bedeutung... Ich höre das Album also nun zum ersten Mal, direkt vom USB-Stick in "P"-Form. Andere haben es schon früher genossen und sind begeistert:
Schwer zu sagen, was hier noch passiert, nachdem man zwischen den verhärteten Fronten aus Industrial-Querschläger und kränkelndem Drumcomputer aufgerieben wurde. The opening moments of the record feature a crackling sample of some character from an old Brazilian film, a speech which translate as advice to “Beware the rule of three”. This could have been a witty, self-deprecating disclaimer, warning of typical third album creative bankruptcy. Portishead's third album is initially more a record to admire than to love, its muscular synthesisers, drum breaks and abrupt endings keeping the tension high. Die CD bietet elf Songs, iTunes legt noch einen Bonustrack drauf. Die Limited edition enthält die Doppel-LP, die Single Machine Gun als 12" Vinyl, den unglaublichen Portishead USB-Stick in "P"-Form inklusive der Songs im 320 kbps mp3-Format, Zugang zu Online-Content (der wohl noch kommen wird) und einiger Filme (Videos zu "Machine gun" und "We carry on", "The rip" live, Eindrücke der Albumaufnahmen und einer "Collage"). Zusätzlich liegt ein Druck eines Nick Uff-Bildes bei.
